A mini-workshop that highlights new media activism and solutions journalism practices for youth and beyond. Participants will learn how to use various tools, like Twitter, Snapchat, Thimble, and Instagram, etc., for various levels of media remixing, civic engagement and political dialogue.

Made by Andrea Hart (Free Spirit Media) and Miriam Martinez (Mikva Challenge)

Levels of Engagement

  1. Make a Meme!

    • Prompt: A problem/issue in __(insert your city)__ that I care about is… _____________ because ____________________________. I think ___(who do you want to do something about it?)______ should ______(what is your solution to it?) _________________ to improve it. Example: A problem in Chicago that I care about is the lack of safe routes to my school because I am scared to walk to and from school. I think Alderman Hive should engage students, parents, and the police district to talk about identifying safe and unsafe areas in my community.
    • Wipe-board: I Dream A World Where … ___(solution to your issue)___ Example: I dream a world where students, parents, and the police can identify safe and unsafe areas in communities so students can feel safe going to school.
    • Take a pic: We will post it later Search for it #IDreamAWorld #HiveBuzz
    • Example: I Dream a World
  2. Tweet and/or Instagram your solution to a stakeholder!

    • Action: Find your stakeholder’s Twitter and/or Instagram handle Example: A problem in Chicago that I care about is the lack of safe routes to my school because I am scared to walk to and from school. I think Alderman Hive should engage students, parents, and the police district to talk about identifying safe and unsafe areas in my community.
    • Tweet your solution: Example- I dream a world where students, parents, and the police can identify safe and unsafe areas in communities so students can feel safe going to school.
  3. Remix Media!

    • Action: Go to any news outlet website and remix a headline or featured image with Thimble or Snapchat
    • Using Thimble:
      1. Brainstorm
      2. Design
      3. Distribute
    • Examples: Headlines Remixed and Chicago Postcard
    • Using Snapchat:
      1. Brainstorm—Use scratch paper to generate a list of issues and interest amongst your crew. Select ONE to research online—use local or national media to find stories on this issue. What about this story do you want to remix—the headline? An Image? What is the problem with this story? How could you create a piece of solutions media?
      2. Design— Log into RCY’s snapchat and frame your shot. Edit the image as you see fit, and post it to my story as well as download the image. What kind of slogan/caption would you use to help people share this image? Save this idea for Instagram :).
      3. Distribute—Log into the Real Chi Youth Instagram and post up your image, along with hashtags and a slogan.
      4. Example: Emma Watson and Feminism
    • Share on Instagram #IDreamAWorld #HiveBuzz
  4. Be descriptive! Seeing an activity in action is very different than reading about it, so be as specific as you can.
